Cultivating Basketry Willow

  • Union Hall, Co. Cork (map)

For thousands of years, our capable human hands have coppiced trees for many of our ancient arts: leather tanning, thatching, wood-work, currach making, and basketry. For each of these crafts a different coppicing technique is used to suit the materials and the use. On this Day we will learn about the time-tested method for growing basketry willow. We will go over choosing and preparing a site; selecting varieties; how to successfully plant, tend and harvest. In this practical hands on class, we will learn the hows and whys and hopefully leave feeling inspired by the wealth of knowledge from the traditions of the land. Each participant will go home with 10 cuttings of their choice and a willow planting guide.
